Architects from the MoDusArchitects studio have updated the interiors and architecture of the ski hotel of the 1930s, wrapping the building with natural wood panels and decorating it with an openwork colonnade.

The Icaro Hotel, located on a mountainside in the Dolomites, has almost a century-old history: in the 1930s, a cozy lodge for skiers was opened here for the first time. The granddaughter of the founder of the hotel, Angelica Sattler, decided to renovate the dilapidated building and asked architects from the MoDusArchitects studio to create a new image of it, in which functionality will be combined with the natural beauty of materials.

The authors of the project have outlined large-scale changes: they expanded the underground parking, gave the T-shaped building a symmetrical parallelepiped shape and completely reorganized the public areas of the hotel. Special attention was paid to the decoration of facades. To hide the traces of repairs left over the past 90 years, the architects almost completely covered the walls of the concrete building with panels of larch wood. The elegance and airiness of the building are given by fences made of thin slats, which decorate balconies and some windows, and columns with struts forming spectacular “bundles”. Their rhythmic sequence completely transformed the southern facade of the building and visually connected it with the warm shades of rocks and trees growing nearby.

The architects designed the lower floor of the hotel as an alternation of several public areas: there is a reception hall, a shop, a lounge area, a bar and a restaurant. The authors continued the “wooden” theme, using light wood for finishing the floor, walls, shelves and partitions. The motifs of the traditional chalet style – skins, stuffed animals and horns – are here inscribed in the context of a modern interior with clear lines, laconic shapes and bright colors. So, electric blue became an accent in the lobby and lounge area, and in the decoration of the restaurant the architects used a non-standard combination of egg yellow and coral.

Icaro guest rooms are like wooden boxes filled with light thanks to panoramic windows. Not only the floors are covered with natural wood, but also the walls with practical built-in wardrobes and cozy alcoves, upholstered with bright felt from the inside. The architects complemented the neutral wooden background with a neighborhood of active patterns and rich shades of textiles.
