Vladimir Berezin loves minimalism, but in this St. Petersburg apartment he experimented with classical architecture and vintage furniture.
In the bedroom there is a bedside table, Zara Home; a table lamp, H&M Home; on the wall on the right is the work of Oleg Ustinov; a panel above the headboard is a homemade metal vase, Zara Home.
Curiosity may have ruined the cat, but it certainly served the heroes of this story well. When the owners of this apartment turned to Vladimir Berezin, they only needed a layout — the designer usually does not undertake such orders. But then an offer was made to him, which he could not refuse: meet at the facility right away. “This is a very beautiful residential complex on Petrovsky Island. It has always been interesting for me to visit there”” says Vladimir. So he went to the meeting, driven at the same time by curiosity and hope — to persuade customers to a more serious cooperation. In the end, it turned out that way.
Public area. Italian armchairs of the 1970s and chairs of the 1960s designed by Carlo Ratti, from Correct Form; TV The Frame, Samsung; coffee table made by Vladimir’s design; sofa, IKEA; above the sofa Ilya Shalashov’s graphics, White Lines gallery; floor lamp, Vesoi; table lamp, New Works; dining table made to order in Nikita Maksimov’s workshop; above the table lamp, Astep; by the window the work of Andrey Pomulev “Hunter” from the series “In parks”.

For a family with two daughters, the apartment is small – 85 m2. In addition, according to the technical task, each girl was supposed to have a separate room (they had to be made identical – both in size and in design). There was not enough space for a public area, and the designer with whom the customers tried to work before meeting Berezin ”broke down”.

The solution that Vladimir proposed does not look obvious: he made the living room tiny and, moreover, a walk-through, giving the main space to the kitchen with a dining table. As the designer explains, this corresponds to the habits of the family — they gather more often at the table than at the TV. In the living room, everything is calculated to the millimeter: the coffee table does not interfere with the passage, and the location of the chairs and the TV is chosen so as not to touch the screen with your head.
Kitchen, IKEA. On the side of the radiator grille, Vladimir made lockers with the same round slots instead of handles.
Almost all of Berezin’s previous projects are minimalistic, this is the first time when he purposefully introduced elements of traditional architecture into the interior. “The apartment has a view of the historical part of Vasilievsky Island and its main dominant, St. Catherine’s Cathedral. That’s why I wanted to make a reference to the classics — but very neat”” explains the designer. Plaster cornices and paneled doors will complement vintage furniture – dining chairs and several armchairs. “We have a very good supplier of vintage furniture in St. Petersburg — Correct Form, with whom I have long wanted to cooperate. And as soon as they had these chairs, I immediately booked them”” says the designer. However, customers had to be persuaded to buy chairs, but they noticed the nameless chairs of the 1970s themselves and fell in love with them at first sight. “Vintage furniture adds playfulness to the interior,” Vladimir believes. And yet he insists that he does not change the minimalist ideals: there are only two main colors in the apartment – white (the customer asked for this) and the color of wood, and the overall situation is still quite concise, although not without ideas.
On the wall of the corridor, Vera Trofimova’s graphics from the White Lines gallery; travertine console, vintage, Italy, 1960s.
”I decided to add fun details to the interior,” says Vladimir. And since the repair budget was small, I came up with and made them myself. For example, a coffee table: instead of legs — vases from H & M Home, and on top – a table top made of travertine, which Vladimir ordered in the workshop. Or the decor on the bedroom wall, on which vases from Zara Nome “float”. “Customers have moved from the outskirts to the central part of the city,” says the designer. —And I wanted the purchase to please them for many years””
