On Fifth Avenue in New York, in a classic building of the late XIX century, a small clinic for psychotherapy Clarity Therapy opened. There are no sterile and characterless interiors typical of medical spaces — instead, the clinic offers its patients comfortable communication in cozy living rooms similar to the habitable rooms of someone’s house.

At the request of Clarity Therapy founder Dr. Logan P. Jones, New York designer Chris McGovern created seven different therapeutic rooms. The leitmotif of the project was a deep shade of blue, which Dr. Jones found pleasant and soothing. McGovern paired it with a refreshing white, and decided to balance the cool palette with the help of natural wood floors and furniture, as well as shimmering brass details.

Thanks to a thoughtful approach, the designer has a truly diverse selection of cabinets, the interiors of which, however, do not argue with each other. There is a laconic modernist-style living room with light walls and catchy pillow patterns, a tropical room with palm leaves on the wallpaper, a marine study with dark blue wall panels and an elegant white hall with an exposition of blue and white porcelain. The most atmospheric and romantic was the living room with hand-painted walls.

Together with the founder of the clinic, McGovern very carefully selected decorative elements and art objects, including a spectacular marble apron, created based on Rorschach spots, and numerous images on a marine theme. “Water is one of the most enriching sources of healing,” says Dr. Jones. “It is a simple, natural, affordable and free resource. The ocean is constantly changing and impresses with its boundless expanse, and the coastlines attract with their duality””

Despite the fact that the interior of the clinic — with a comfortable lobby, a waiting room similar to a living room and a small kitchen – resembles a spacious apartment, the designer also took care of specific elements important for psychotherapeutic practice. So, in the offices there are no overly expressive images and mirrors in which clients would see themselves during the session — this distracts from the conversation. Each room is soundproofed and equipped with individual air conditioning, and the seating furniture is selected so that patients with different body features feel comfortable.
