Valeria Dzyuba, the founder of the NIDO Interiors bureau, told AD about her new project — this is a minimalistic apartment “warmed” by living materials.

Through a large window you can access the terrace; the wall below is lined with travertine, “Neolith-M”; table In Between, & Tradition; chairs Rivulet, Living Divani; ceramic vases “Garden” by Tamara Shevchuk from Manner & Matter; ceramics on the table, Troubadour; curtains, Volokno; lamps above the table Parc 03, Lambert & Fils.Photo: Sergey Krasyuk; stylist: Natalia Onufreychuk

The project, work on which was delayed for almost a year due to quarantine and the pandemic, despite the circumstances, was implemented in exact accordance with the idea. The apartment has an area of a little more than 100 m2, quite compact in itself, turned out to be spacious and multi-layered. Our favorite work with volumes here manifested itself as much as possible: different levels, circular movement, integration of stairs that are not obvious at first glance, and, of course, access to the roof, which will come to life this spring and will be supplemented with shrubs and trees.

We have reworked the original layout in detail, placing the kitchen in the entrance area and assembling it into a single space with the living room and dining room. Navigation is designed to keep through traffic in the main part of the apartment, marking the clear boundaries of each of the functional zones. The exit to the roof was expanded, as a result of which another panoramic window appeared in the apartment. Since the opening was originally located significantly above the floor level, we decided to level this difference and raised part of the space to the podium, which highlighted the living room area and provided it with the best views. Inside the podium there are supply and exhaust ventilation and part of the air conditioning system.

We designed most of the furniture for the project ourselves. Already familiar to us, hidden storage systems are assembled into continuous clean blocks, imperceptibly passing into kitchen columns, doors or panels behind which engineering systems hide. We are very grateful to our customers for their courage and trust — here we were able to experiment with small forms. This is how a self-balancing bench appeared – on a console, without back legs, which we designed based on the designs of Marcel Breuer, whose furniture made of steel tubes became the main achievement of rational design.

Clean and strict forms soften the choice of materials. A large monolithic travertine sink was continued in the decoration of the wall at the exit to the terrace. The corner of the mine in the kitchen island area is decorated with masonry blocks of the Mutina factory designed by Patricia Urquiola. Stainless steel cubes forming part of the staircase complement the window sills made of the same material. The textures of the furniture finishes are soft and natural. The color scheme is warm, terracotta and sand shades evoke memories of traveling and endless sandy beaches. For us, this project is interesting for working with a variety of textures and materials; minimalistic in structure and assembly, it is rich in details that we want to consider.
