Architects from the bureau Feldman Architecture have restored a modernist cylinder house, from the windows of which there are dizzying views of the Los Altos Hills.

Private houses and villas with a circular layout are a typical phenomenon for California modernism. One of these buildings, located on the hill of the town of Los Altos Hills, attracted clients of the architectural bureau Feldman Architecture. The new owners fell in love with the non-standard appearance of the building and the views opening from the panoramic windows, but asked the architects to transform the house for a comfortable modern life.

One of the important changes was the new glazing of the house, which allowed more sunlight to enter rooms with a low ceiling and seriously improved the view from the windows. The living-dining room, occupying the most advantageously located sector of the cylinder, seems to hover over the valley, and in the central part of the building (previously there was a courtyard) there is a well-equipped kitchen with a rounded island and a light well in the center of the ceiling.

From the kitchen you can access the wooden-paved terrace-dining room — one of several outdoor spaces of the house. A balcony repeating the shape of the building connects its front part with the rear terrace, which rests on a stepped garden on a hill. The balcony also serves as a kind of corridor that unites both public areas and four bedroom sectors. Another place to relax in the fresh air is a small lawn at the entrance to the house.

Taking into account the specific characteristics of the building, the architects made the exterior and interior of the house restrained and dim. They lined the facades with wood fired according to the Japanese sugi ban show technology, and decorated the interior spaces in white and gray. There are minimalist sofas, tables and chairs, honey wood accents reminiscent of mid-century style, and several design icons such as Charles’ chaise longue and Ray Eames.
