Translated from Catalan, Verd means “green”, but designer Alexandra Burmistrova challenged herself and used neutral shades instead of the usual bright colors.

Alexander Burmistrov was invited to design the Verd restaurant by its founders Yulia Tokmeninova and Alexey Ivanov, who are familiar to AD readers from the Blau cafe. Then the co-owners expected a symbiosis of modern Berlin and colorful Istanbul from the designer, this time Alexandra’s fantasy threw her into Catalonia: “Catalonia for me is Barcelona, and if in the previous project the interior was built on a clash of cultures, then in the Verd project I continued this story, but took as a basis a combination of modernity and the Middle Ages, calling it “on the contrast of epochs”.

Alexandra began to study photos of her travels from Barcelona. “Besides being one of my favorite cities on our planet, Barcelona is one of the brightest representatives of architecture. The fusion of the Old Town or Barri Gothic (Gothic Quarter), in which the atmosphere of the XIV—XV centuries reigns, and representatives of modernity, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and David Chipperfield, formed the basis of the overall concept””

The space of suitable scales was seen in the Barrin House residential complex. The room with five windows and a total area of 300 m2 used to be rented out for a jewelry store, Alexandra had to place two kitchens here — technical and open, seating for guests, a bar, a common table, a bathroom, as well as storage spaces and an office. “Therefore, we demolished the existing partitions and erected our own in accordance with the technical specifications and technology of the kitchen-bar,” says Alexandra. “The restaurant was supposed to be cozy, family-friendly, for warm friendly conversations, despite its decent size.”

Feeling how the memories of Barcelona soothe and “neutralize the inner challenge”, Alexandra decided to abandon direct work with color and succumb to the impulse that arose. The Church of the Holy Family (Sagrada Familia) suggested Burmistrovoy material for wall decoration – sand-colored micro cement. The designer immediately “saw” the composition of massive decorative lamps when creating the concept, and Alexandra invited architect Stephanie Stambolieva to finalize the furniture details — the girls designed all the cabinet and free-standing furniture together (Derevo Group helped to make joinery). “And even vases were specially created according to sketches in the KVN-Studio pottery studio”” Burmistrova notes.

The bar has become the personification of the Gothic style (“After all, the furniture of the Gothic era is simple and heavy, in the truest sense of the word,” the designer explains), the bench and wooden furniture refer to the Middle Ages, the whole wall rack with handmade ceramics symbolizes modernity. “And mentally sends us for a walk to the complex of six buildings of the “City of Justice” by architect David Chipperfield,” the designer adds. And the samples from the Verd wine list became the physical embodiment of the Old World, so a separate room was required for the drink.
