Roman and Williams architects and Romanek design studio have realized Gwyneth Paltrow’s dreams of a quiet family home away from the hustle and bustle of the world.

Living room. Onyx bar designed by designers; lamps designed by Lindsay Adelman; sofa designed by Charles Zahn, The Invisible Collection; armchairs designed by Jan Excelsius; coffee table designed by Julian Mayor; in the background, an armchair, Rick Owens; carpet, Woven; over the fireplace by John Baldessari.

A candle with the scent of Gwyneth Paltrow’s most intimate place has made a lot of noise and caused as many questions, and in general her Goop company looks a little caricatured. What can not be said about the new house, where the actress settled with her husband, producer Brad Falchak, and children. There is nothing “based on organic herbs” and “without toxins”, there are no charged crystals and sprays to protect against vampires, but there is a place for the whole family where you can relax body and soul. Every centimeter of this house is verified, like the proportions of a “Vitruvian man”, and the details of architecture and interior can become the personification of the word “harmony”.

“The strength of this house is how subtly light works in space,” says Paltrow. “While working on the project, we thought a lot about how we live, what each family member likes and how comfortable we are to spend time together, so we decided to focus on communication and the emotions that everyone experiences.”

Gwyneth Paltrow fell in love with Montecito a long time ago, even before the start of her acting career, while studying at the University of California in Santa Barbara. “I’ve always gravitated to this place, and even when I lived in London, my children and I always went here on holidays,” recalls Gwyneth. “This is a real treasure among all American vacation spots.” She came here again in 2015, and her hands reached out to her iPhone to check out Redfin, her “favorite porn application” (an analogue of our “Cyanogen”), and found a house for demolition in a very picturesque place there. “He reminded me of the movie ”Grey Gardens”, where many small animals lived on the territory, hordes of beetles,” says Paltrow. —I fell in love with this place and bought a plot.” From that moment on, a new chapter began in the life of the actress called “Building your own house from scratch.” This chapter was not easy: during any construction, there are a million technical issues, things that they forgot to provide for, and morally it is not an easy process.

Gwyneth asked her old friends Robin Standefer and Stephen Alyosha from the Roman and Williams bureau to take care of the house, who had already designed a loft for her in In New York, the pop-up boutique of her Goop brand, as well as her first boutique in Los Angeles. “Robin and Stephen were able to turn a very specific space of my loft in Tribeca into an elegant apartment, and I came to them again precisely for their ability to create magic,” says Gwyneth. —When we started the project in Montecito, the kids were young, I wasn’t married to Brad yet, and so I had to come up with a space for the future that didn’t exist yet.”

Paltrow describes his vision of the house as “the interior of a typical Parisian apartment in the walls of an old barn, necessarily with high ceilings, where there is a lot of natural light and space and you can subsequently change the space a little”” The architects deftly combined the lightness and airiness of Parisian interiors and the power of traditional rural buildings, presenting their famous client with a project of an elongated one-story building with a roof of flexible tiles and walls of stone of different sizes to create the effect of antiquity. Electricity is generated here using solar panels, and all the waste water goes to watering the garden and vegetable garden.

“A house should reflect its owner, both physically and mentally,” says Robin Standefer. — We took as a basis the anthropological data of Gwyneth, her height, subtlety, beauty and her desire for truth and purity. This house is refined, like its owner, tall, with rounded corners”” The architects are convinced that in this place it was possible to build a house exclusively from natural materials that will emphasize the beauty of nature around. They used natural stone, not only in the construction, but also in the decoration: for example, the bar in the living room is made of onyx, there is also a marble fireplace portal from the XVIII century.

A home spa deserves special attention — something in between the baths of Caracalla and the resorts of the Aman network: here it is perfectly traced how subtly architects are able to work with form, proportions, materials, color and textures. ”This spa really resembles ancient baths, only decorated not with ancient marble, but with light green tiles,” says Standefer.

Gwyneth Paltrow, obsessed with furniture and interior design, initially thought she would equip her new home herself. “I thought I would just buy different cool furniture and everything would be great, but while the construction was going on, I realized that there were too many nuances in the house, so many things to pay attention to, so I turned to professional designer Brigitte Romanek, with whom we have been friends for more than twenty years,” Paltrow recalls. — I invited her to do this project together to improve my design skills a little. Besides, I was sure it would be a lot of fun.” Romanek decided to act on opposites: hard and soft, streamlined and rough, old and new — and thanks to this approach, she managed to assemble the very set of objects that perfectly fit into the new house.

Many things were chosen by Paltrow herself: for example, she really liked the lamps from Lindsay Adelman, and she asked her to create a light installation specifically for her living room. ”Such intricate things in this peaceful space remind me of punk rock jewelry in a calm way,” explains Gwyneth. But the hammock designed by Jim Civic moved with the hostess from her previous home in Los Angeles, and it looks very organic, as if it had always hung here.
“There will always be unpleasant moments in any big business, but you need to keep the full picture in mind, and then everything will work out,” says Gwyneth Paltrow. “This house has taught me calmness and gratitude, it fully reflects me, and this is the most important thing””
